Inland Rail a Big Win in Federal Budget

The Federal Government’s commitment on the Brisbane to Melbourne Inland Rail project is a big win for regional and rural Councils, rail freight stakeholders and local communities.

Rail Freight Alliance has welcomed the Government’s $8.4 billion commitment to the inland rail project, connecting Brisbane and Melbourne through a seamless freight corridor.

Rail Freight Alliance Executive Officer, Reid Mather, said the announcement was a historic investment and would drive new market opportunities across Victoria.

“Rail Freight Alliance has long advocated for the delivery of this project,” Mr Mather said

“Having been spoken about for years, it is a positive step forward to see the Federal Government delivering key investments to get this moving.

“The Brisbane to Melbourne Inland Rail will mean better access to markets and infrastructure, better connectivity across the network and lower prices.

The Government’s announcement will build on its $890 million previous investment to progress works on the project and make it construction-ready.

Rail Freight Alliance also welcomed the Government’s investment in regional rail infrastructure including upgrades for the Gippsland Line, Avon Bridge and Murray Basin Rail Line.

“This is a strong set of initiatives which delivers critical investment in rail and rail freight across the nation. Rail Freight Alliance will continue to work with State and Federal Governments and Opposition to support the delivery of these initiatives going forward.”
