Movement on Port Rail Shuttle

Rail Freight Alliance today welcomed the announcement that an Expression of Interest process would soon begin to consider initiatives for a Port Rail Shuttle at the Port of Melbourne.

Rail Freight Alliance Executive Officer, Reid Mather, said this was a positive indication from State and Federal Governments after what had been a long and drawn out process.

“The Rail Freight Alliance has long advocated for a rail freight option at the Port of Melbourne,” Mr Mather said

“This will mean faster, easier and a more cost efficient delivery of our goods to port.

“We know that a greater use of rail as a mode share of freight is safer, more efficient and has less environmental impact than road transport.

“The Port Rail Shuttle is a vital piece of infrastructure which must be built if we are to truly recognise the potential of the Port of Melbourne into the future.”

The Rail Freight Alliance urged Governments to consider options carefully and work with industry and the Port of Melbourne to ensure future developments supported better access and use of one of Victoria’s most important assets.
